Single-Position Intervention Fails: Distributed Output Templates Drive In-Context Learning

Research reveals that task encoding for in-context learning in large language models is distributed, not localized. Single-position activation intervention achieves 0% task transfer despite 100% probing accuracy, while multi-position intervention achieves up to 96% transfer, supporting the distributed output template hypothesis.

Continual Distillation of Teachers from Different Domains

Deep learning models are growing so large that their storage needs can exceed those of large-scale datasets. To address this, researchers introduce Continual Distillation (CD), a new paradigm where a student model learns sequentially from a stream of teachers without retaining access to earlier teachers. CD faces two challenges: unavailability of teacher training data and varying teacher expertise. They show that external unlabeled data enables Unseen Knowledge Transfer (UKT), allowing the student to acquire knowledge from domains absent in its training data. Sequential distillation also causes Unseen Knowledge Forgetting (UKF), where transferred knowledge is lost after training on later teachers. To trade off between UKT and UKF, they propose Self External Data Distillation (SE2D), which…

Transformation Categorization Based on Group Decomposition Theory Using Parameter Division

This paper proposes an unsupervised method for categorizing transformations between pairs of inputs using parameter division. By splitting a single transformation's parameter into components and imposing homomorphism constraints, the method identifies normal subgroups without auxiliary assumptions. Evaluations on rotation, translation, and scale image pairs show that group-decomposition constraints drive appropriate categorization.

CreativityBench: Evaluating Agent Creative Reasoning via Affordance-Based Tool Repurposing

CreativityBench is a new benchmark for evaluating large language models' creative problem-solving ability through affordance-based tool use. It includes a large-scale affordance knowledge base (4K entities, 150K+ annotations) and 14K tasks. Evaluation of 10 state-of-the-art LLMs reveals that models can select plausible objects but fail to identify correct parts, affordances, and physical mechanisms, leading to significant performance drops. Model scaling saturates quickly, strong reasoning does not translate to creative affordance discovery, and Chain-of-Thought yields limited gains. Creative tool use remains a major challenge.
