Jørnal: A Journaling App Where the Page Is Always Blank

Jørnal is a minimalist journaling app that always presents a blank page, focusing on a single entry per session. It eschews folders, markdown, social features, and AI prompts. Completed entries are locked and cannot be rewritten. It offers free full archive downloads, and a paid plan includes incremental backups, email backups, and semantic search ('Recall'). All data remains within the user's account and is never shared or used for training.

Jørnal

A quiet place to write a single entry each time you arrive. Yesterday is frozen. Today is open.

Journaling isn't a habit. It's a practice.

That's why you always get a blank canvas to type into. Always ready to write, any time.

The page is always blank.

Open Jørnal and you get a blank page. Type. It saves as you write.

When you're done, press ⌘↵. The entry locks. The page closes.

The next time you visit, the page is blank again. Yesterday's entry is on the page above—read it whenever; it can't be rewritten.

What this isn't.

Not a notebook with folders. Not a markdown editor. Not public, not collaborative. No streaks, no AI nudges. And no reminders—unless you ask.

One page. One entry. Every time.

Your words are yours.

Three ways to keep a copy of what you've written:

Full archive

Every entry as a Markdown file, bundled into one ZIP and named by date. Download it from Settings whenever you want. Always free, no expiration.

Incremental download❧

The same format, but only the entries written since you last downloaded. Useful for keeping a synced copy on your own machine without re-fetching everything each time.

Part of the paid plan. ❧

Email backup❧

A digest of recent entries delivered to your inbox on a weekly or monthly cadence. A backup that runs without you having to remember.

Part of the paid plan. ❧

Find what you wrote, even when you can't remember the exact words. ❧

Part of the paid plan. ❧

“Recall” is a search that matches by meaning rather than literal words. You type a question in your own language—“the time I felt lost in Madrid”, “early morning entries”, “the week I started running”—and “Recall” returns entries whose contents fit the idea, even if you never used those exact words.

Each entry gets a fingerprint as you write—a small mathematical signature on our own servers. When you search, your question gets a fingerprint too, and the closest matches by meaning come back.

Fingerprints stay scoped to your account; they're never shared, never used to train anything, never sent to a third-party. And we definitely don't use any AI providers.

Your words never leave our servers.

The paid plan❧

Supporter ($4 / month, $40 / year) gets you backups on a schedule, “Recall”, and custom books for different threads of writing. The app itself stays free; Supporter keeps the servers running. Cancel any time; you will never lose what you've written.
