Veeda AI, a startup led by a team of former Nvidia Corp. researcher and renowned computer scientist Sanja Fidler, has taken its bow on the main stage after raising $90 million in a seed funding round today. The round, which was first reported by The Logic, was co-led by Khosla Ventures and Radical Ventures, is one of the largest seed financings ever raised by a Canadian startup, and comes just three months after the business was founded. The startup, officially known as Veeda Innovation Inc., is a developer of multimodal “world models” designed to simulate the physical world. Its goal is to create infinitely scalable simulated environments that can be used to train embodied artificial intelligence agents through repeated interactions. In a post on LinkedIn, Fidler (pictured, center) explained that it’s unrealistic to think that robots can learn through trial and error in the real world, because robotic hardware doesn’t scale in the same way as compute, it can be dangerous if mistakes are made, and it’s impossible to parallelize real-world experience. That’s why robots need high-fidelity simulated environments instead, and that’s why Veeda is developing world models as a kind of “Matrix” for physical AI. “To scale interactive learning, robots will need to learn in a simulated reality,” Fidler wrote. This is something Fidler and her two co-founders Huan Ling (right) and Zan Gojcic (left) have done before. Fidler first joined Nvidia in 2018 to help establish its research unit in Toronto, and that later became the company’s Spatial Intelligence Lab. It was there that Fidler and her team developed software that could simulate the way autonomous vehicles and humanoid agents interact out here in the real world. Fidler and Ling later helped to develop Nvidia’s first world models for physical AI developers. “At Veeda, our sole mission is to build simulated reality for Physical AI,”Fidler added. “Our conviction is that this will become the critical infrastructure layer for all areas of robotics.” Veeda’s backers are some of the biggest hitters in the venture capital world, and they have backed numerous research-focused AI startups in the past. They’ve notably also worked together, having co-led the seed funding round of former Google LLC Chief Scientist Jeff Dean’s startup Discovery Loop earlier this month. The VCs are backing other world model makers too. Khosla was one of the lead investors in the autonomous trucking company Waabi Innovation Inc.’s $750 million round in January, while Radical participated. Waabi is developing world models specifically for training vehicles how to drive fully autonomously. Radical has also backed Fei-Fei Li’s spatial intelligence startup World Labs Inc., which raised $500 million in January, as well as Decart.ai Inc., which banked $300 million in May.
