Redefining Mainstream PCs: 3rd Gen Intel Core Ushers in the Era of All-AI Thin-and-Light Laptops
Intel announces 3rd Gen Core processors for 'All-AI Thin-and-Light' laptops, featuring Intel 18A process, up to 40 TOPS AI performance, and system-level innovations via the 'Firefly' plan. Over 70 partner designs expected, targeting diverse user scenarios.
Intel today officially launched its 3rd Gen Core processor family, designed to power a new category of 'All-AI Thin-and-Light' laptops that redefine mainstream PC experiences. Built on the Intel 18A process node, the new chips deliver up to 64% lower power consumption and 2.7x better graphics AI performance compared to the previous generation. They are the first Intel Core processors to support hybrid on-device and cloud AI, with a platform AI performance of up to 40 TOPS. This enables mainstream PCs to run demanding AI applications locally while maintaining long battery life and instant responsiveness.
In conjunction with the chip launch, Intel announced the 'Firefly Firefly Plan', a system-level innovation initiative in collaboration with ecosystem partners. By deeply integrating advantages from the mobile phone ecosystem, the plan optimizes product design, component selection, and cost structure. Compared to the previous generation, optimized PCBs are 5% smaller and use 7% fewer components. Standardized motherboard and I/O board connections, along with modular core circuits, improve design efficiency and reduce costs, allowing the new 'light, beautiful, clean, and thin' AI laptops to span a wide range of price points.
Intel highlighted five key usage scenarios for the new platform. Parents can use local AI to help children with homework; students benefit from all-day productivity with a thin and light design; young professionals leverage on-device AI for meeting summaries and data analysis; entrepreneurs streamline content creation and data organization; and seniors enjoy a natural digital life through voice assistants. These scenarios demonstrate how the 3rd Gen Core transforms traditional thin-and-light laptops into intelligent companions for every stage of life.
At the launch event, partners including ASUS, Colorful, Honor, HP, Lenovo, Changwang, and Minisforum showcased over 70 designs based on the new platform, covering traditional PCs as well as new form factors like AI NAS. Intel said the processor family will also expand into diverse edge computing scenarios, bringing rich AI capabilities to a broad mainstream audience.
