It gives you actionable ways to improve your sleep based on trends. It uses a privacy-focused way of tracking sleep with motion sensors.Hatch has been in the business of helping people fall asleep since 2016 with its line of white noise machines and sunrise alarm clocks. But now it wants to track your sleep with the new , announced today. Motion-sensing technologyThe clock is the latest iteration of Hatch's sunrise alarm clock models, except this one has motion-sensing technology to track your sleep and tell you how well you slept while providing actionable ways to improve your sleep routine and get a better night's sleep. Also: This sunrise alarm clock helped improve my sleep routine "We're entirely focused on behaviors you can control, like what time you get in bed, what time you get out of bed, whether you followed through on your routine for the night," Hatch's chief product officer, Fiona Biles, told ZDNET. "And we think that's a much better way to actually improve sleep outcomes over time than giving you a score on something that you can't actually directly control." The Hatch Sleep Clock uses a motion detection sensor with ultra-low-power radio signals that can track when you get into bed, your respiration rate and sleep stages, and any movement throughout the night. Then, in the morning, instead of getting a sleep score like those provided by other sleep trackers, you get personalized suggestions on how to improve your sleep routine and hygiene. "People don't want more data about their sleep; they want to know what to do about it," Biles said. "But what you don't get from the wearable is what to do with that data, what action to take today, how to change your sleep routine today to actually create something that you can stick with long term." Also: These brain-tracking earbuds use EEG to measure your cognitive performance Hatch's suggestions might include adding one of its sound baths or nighttime podcasts to your nighttime routine, providing education on best practices for sleep hygiene, and changing the time you get into bed. "We care a lot about what time you get in bed. And because we have a motion and presence sensor, we're able to see that much more clearly than a lot of other wearables can." The company points to a 2020 study published in the journal Sleep Medicine that showed radar technology detected sleep/wake times more correctly than a sleep study, otherwise known as polysomnography. This same contactless motion sensor technology is used in other devices like Somnofy, which is primarily used as a sleep data aid for hospitals and nursing homes. Also: The best sleep trackers you can buy Biles said Hatch isn't interested in providing you with more data about your sleep, but rather acts as an intervention layer to change behaviors you can control and form better sleep habits. Availability and priceThe Hatch Sleep Clock is , and ZDNET will review the device in the coming months and share its experience and thoughts.
