Anthropic CEO: Open-Source AI is getting dangerous

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned lawmakers that open-source AI is on a 'very dangerous path,' as companies lose the ability to monitor misuse, revoke access, or update safety guardrails once powerful models are released openly. The remarks sparked widespread backlash on social media, with many accusing him of prioritizing profit over safety.

Open models are taking away from Anthropic’s bottom line. And that would not stop

That’s the point of OPENSOURCE. ITS OPEN. FOR THE HUMANITY. NOT FOR ELITE.

if open source is a national security risk does that mean the administration expects companies to get a government license just to host weights on a local server

Yeah he's pretty much forced to sing the government song now. Everyone knows that knowledge doesn't make you a criminal. You can read a book on biochemistry and still need resources and serious experiments to be able to do anything. No AI or book can overcome already regulated resources too.

This guy’s fear tactics are so obvious. If somebody is committing a crime with an LLM, it’s the jurisdiction of the law not the jurisdiction of this guy whose law being a congressional body who owns a private corporation to dictate what people can cannot do with LLMs. Isn’t it convenient that he would be the only provider of LLMs and he’s telling everybody else they can’t use their own for free

If there is no opensource, then they can increase the subscription fees whenever they want. Anthropic wont be a giant company in coming years, as AI itself will destroy the edge of antrhopic. Like deepseek, a new cheap model will come to compete with claude.

This whole song and pony dance is just about him having control and being in dominant position. He can only do that and change the high token prices if he doesn’t have widely available and MUCH cheaper to use open source LLMs.

Sounds like the technocrats want to hose our ability to be self sufficient. Who allows them to dictate to us what is “safe”? You guys play god all the time and lecture us about open source?

Not this time, you destroyed traditional jobs and charge us for usage?

says a guy who sanctimoniously donated MCP to open source so anyone could do it... what is dangerous is how "open leak" all the tech bros allow for the "oopsie, we just leaked novel IP and accounts that matter." I say let's open source everything a day before the bill is signed.
