Show HN: Etymology Database from Wiktionary
Using Google AI credits, the author parsed about a million Wiktionary entries to create an etymology database, enabling search by affixes, cognates, derivatives, meaning, language of origin, and part of speech. The project is a work in progress with unverified data.
I used Google AI credits to parse about a million wiktionary entries to make an etymology database. Still a work in progress.
You can search words by the affixes they contain, find cognates, derivatives, and more, all information that is available but otherwise latent in Wiktionary.
And you can search words by meaning, language(s) of origin, part of speech, and much more. Hoping to continue to improve the dataset and have an updated and accurate English etymology database.
I have not (of course) personally validated all of the data, but the presentations on the site are relatively conservative.
