開発の背景

翻訳は、日本語話者が英語や中国語のコンテンツと接する上で、最も日常的な壁の一つです。海外の記事を読むとき、英文のメールを書くとき、海外の取引先とやり取りするとき、私たちは日々、言語のあいだを行き来しています。

しかし、広く使われている翻訳ツールは、ビジネス敬語のニュアンス、日本固有の文化概念、略語やネットスラングといった「日本語らしさ」の難所で、しばしば意図からズレた訳を返します。文法は正しくても、相手との距離感やトーンまでは届きません。

Sakana AIは、日本語と日本文化への深い理解を核とした事後学習（post-training）技術を研究してきました。海外のフロンティアモデルを日本仕様へ適応させたモデルシリーズ「Namazu」は、その成果の一つです。この強みが翻訳でこそ発揮できると考え、今回 Sakana Translateとして公開しました。

コンセプトは「日本語を、深く翻訳する」。単語や文構造を置き換えるだけでなく、文章の背景にある文脈・トーン・距離感まで届けることを目指しています。

3つの翻訳機能

機能①「翻訳」：長文をそのまま貼り付けるだけ。最大約5,000字に対応し、ストリーミング表示で訳文がリアルタイムに出てきます。メール、資料、記事、ウェブページなど、日々の業務で発生する「ちょっと長い文章」をそのまま処理できます。

機能②「添削」：入力した文章を、より自然で適切な表現に整えるモード。変更箇所は差分ハイライトで表示されるので、どこがどう変わったか一目で確認できます。文法だけでなく、自然さ、丁寧さ、トーン、相手との距離感まで調整。ビジネスメールや英文作成の品質チェックに。

機能③「質疑」：翻訳・添削の結果について、その場で追加質問ができます。ニュアンスの確認、別の表現の提案、文法や語彙選択の解説など、翻訳画面からそのまま深掘りできるので、翻訳ツールと辞書を行き来する必要がなくなります。

ベンチマーク結果

翻訳品質について、WMT 2024 General Translationタスクの評価データを用い、XCOMET-XLによる評価を行いました。その結果、Sakana Translateは主要な上位モデル群に続くスコア帯に位置し、翻訳エンジンとして競争力のある品質を示しました。

Background

Moving between languages is part of everyday life. A professional in Japan reads an overseas article, drafts an email in English, or messages a client abroad. Someone outside Japan studies the language, works through a note from a Tokyo colleague, or tries to catch the nuance of a phrase they just learned. In both directions, translation is one of the most common bridges people cross.

Yet widely used translation tools frequently miss what makes Japanese, Japanese: the nuances of business honorifics, culturally specific concepts, abbreviations, and internet slang. The grammar may be correct, but the interpersonal tone—how formal or familiar, warm or reserved—gets lost. And tone is often exactly what a reader, or a learner, most wants to understand.

Sakana AI has been researching post-training technology built around a deep understanding of Japanese language and culture. Namazu—our model series that adapts leading open-weight models to the Japanese context—is one of the results of that work. We believe its strengths extend naturally to translation, whether you are working across languages or learning one.

Our concept: deep translation for Japan. We aim to deliver not just the words and sentence structures, but the context, tone, and register they carry—so that translation becomes not only a way to get an answer, but a way to understand.

Three Translation Functions

1. Translate: Paste in long-form text and translate it. Supports up to approximately 5,000 Japanese characters, with streaming output so results appear in real time. Translation history is saved automatically. Designed for the long documents that arise in daily work: emails, slide decks, articles, and web pages.

1. Proofread: Submit a draft, and Sakana Translate refines it into a more natural, contextually appropriate version. Changes are shown with diff highlighting so you can see exactly what changed and where. It goes beyond grammar corrections—it also addresses naturalness, politeness, tone, and the appropriate level of formality for the reader. Particularly useful for business email and English writing workflows.

1. Ask: Ask follow-up questions about any translation result to deepen your understanding. Clarify nuances, explore alternative expressions, or get explanations of grammar and word choice — all within the same context.

Benchmark Results

To assess translation quality, we evaluated Sakana Translate using XCOMET-XL on the WMT 2024 General Translation task dataset. The results placed Sakana Translate within the score band trailing closely behind the leading models, demonstrating that it delivers competitive quality as a translation engine.
