Instinct, the developer of an artificial intelligence assistant popular among Silicon Valley tech workers, is reportedly raising $250 million in funding. The company told the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday that the round is being co-led by Index Ventures and Benchmark. It’s set to value Instinct at $2.5 billion. The startup previously raised $100 million from a consortium that included Conviction Partners and Greenoaks. Instinct, officially Spear Street Technology Inc., is led by Chief Executive Officer Noah Shinn. He previously worked at Sierra Inc., an AI startup headed by former OpenAI Group PBC board chair Bret Taylor. Instinct entered the consumer AI scene in February by making its assistant available via an invite-only private beta program. Consumers can set up Instinct by connecting it to applications such as Gmail. The assistant can manage the user’s calendar, send emails and perform related tasks. It’s also capable of automating more complex multi-step workflows. Shinn told the Journal that one early adopter used Instinct to buy a house. It’s unclear what AI model powers the assistant. One possibility is that Instinct used the $100 million it had raised prior to today’s round to build a custom neural network. The most cost-efficient way to build a custom AI is to fine-tune, or customize, an existing open-source large language model. That customization is usually done by providing the LLM with additional training data. Many AI services use not one but several models under the hood. They send complex requests to a frontier LLM while simpler prompts are processed by a less capable, more cost-efficient algorithm. Instinct’s data collection policies have drawn scrutiny from some early adopters. According to the Journal, the company’s terms of service enable it to train its AI models on user data. Shinn told the publication that his team is working to address users’ cybersecurity concerns. Instinct is the latest in a series of viral AI agents to have emerged over the past two years. The first was Manus, which made its debut last March. It was followed by OpenClaw, a desktop-based AI agent that supports LLMs from more than a half-dozen providers. Gaining access to Instinct’s private beta program requires users to join a waitlist or receive an invitation from an existing customer. Startup Superhuman Inc., the developer of a popular email client, used the invite-only access model to great effect as part of its marketing strategy. The company’s waitlist at one point had 180,000 users. Superhuman was acquired by Grammarly Inc. last year. Today’s report didn’t specify how Instinct will use its newly raised capital. The company’s one-page website hints that it plans to buy additional computing infrastructure.
