Beatport has banned tracks made entirely or mostly with AI tools from its platform. The company revealed last week that it had updated its content guidelines to deal with the rise in AI-produced music, and that a ban would now stop people from being able to make money from such content on the site. Tracks that have been partially created with the help of AI tools, but retain some element of being made by humans, will also now carry a tag identifying them as such. Beatport’s announcement comes after the company formed a partnership with Beatdapp, an organisation that specialises in authenticating and verifying music streamed in real time. Beatdapp’s systems will prohibit people from being able to upload tracks made by AI, and will also notify the rights-holders of any music that has been used to produce the AI tracks. In a statement, Beatport CEO Matt Gralen said: “Beatport exists to serve DJs, and empower artists and labels. This means partnering with our community and providing confidence in what our platform offers. While new production techniques have driven electronic music forward since the beginning, there is a difference between a tool that assists human creation and a system that replaces it entirely. Beatport is built on the former.”
