The update promises sharper details, more natural lighting and textures, stronger reference-image preservation, more reliable multi-turn editing, and up to 50% lower generation latency than Images 2.0. But marketing claims only tell part of the story. The official demonstrations offer a better look at what the model can actually do. In this article, I’ll outline all Images 2.5 features with demos, to help you get familiar with the latest update. Table of contents What is ChatGPT Images 2.5? Demo Workflows on ChatGPT Image 2.5 Other New Features in ChatGPT Images 2.5 ChatGPT Images 2.5 in the API Final Thoughts Frequently Asked Questions What is ChatGPT Images 2.5? ChatGPT Images 2.5 is OpenAI’s new image-generation and editing model inside ChatGPT. The biggest emphasis in this release is image editing. The official demonstrations are grouped around three capabilities: Reference-image fidelity: keeping the identity and important characteristics of an input image while changing it. Precision editing: changing one specific part of an image while preserving the rest. Multi-turn consistency: making several edits in sequence without the image progressively falling apart. That distinction is important. Generating one impressive image is relatively easy for modern image models. The harder problem is taking an existing image and saying, “Change this, but leave everything else alone.” Images 2.5 is designed around that problem. Demo Workflows on ChatGPT Image 2.5 The first set of demonstrations focuses on reference images. ChatGPT Images 2.5 is better at preserving recognizable subjects, lighting, textures, and distinctive features while moving them into different settings, styles, or compositions. Dog in Costume The second example continues the same idea with an animal reference. Rather than generating an entirely new dog, the demonstration is intended to show how Images 2.5 can work from an existing subject while introducing a new visual treatment. This matters for practical image editing because users generally aren’t starting from a blank canvas. They already have a photograph, character, product, or other visual they want to work with. Headshot from Photobooth Here, OpenAI demonstrates another reference-led transformation. The goal is not merely to create a convincing headshot. It is to take information from the supplied image and carry the subject into a different presentation. This is a useful test for image models because the output needs to preserve the person while changing the context and composition. Composite Party Photo The composite example pushes the same capability further by dealing with multiple people and a more complicated scene. This is considerably more demanding than changing the background of a simple portrait. A successful edit has to preserve multiple subjects and their visual relationships while making the requested changes. OpenAI uses this example to illustrate how Images 2.5 handles more complicated reference-driven compositions. Other New Features in ChatGPT Images 2.5 The model improvements are only part of the release. OpenAI is also adding new ways to work with images inside ChatGPT. Sketch This is my favourite feature of this new release! The long-standing desire of giving life to ideas is here: Source: Verge ChatGPT offers Sketch, which lets users draw a rough idea directly in ChatGPT and use that drawing as a visual guide for image generation. OpenAI says users can sketch things such as a room layout, an outfit, or a simple doodle and then describe the desired style. Templates Templates provide starting points for popular formats such as posters and merchandise instead of forcing users to begin from a blank prompt. This is a big help for getting popular graphics like posters, headshots etc. made and doesn’t require every user to run for getting their prompts (or to write it themselves). Shared Prompts Images can now be shared together with the prompt used to create them, allowing someone else to use the same idea with their own images and details. OpenAI has also published an example built around an ’80s-style photo transformation. ChatGPT Images 2.5 in the API OpenAI is also releasing two API models. GPT-Image-2.5 Flare brings the quality, editing, and speed improvements to the API and is positioned as the default option for most applications. GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst is aimed at higher-end visual workflows where tighter editing control is more important and longer generation times are acceptable. OpenAI says Flare delivers higher-quality images than GPT-Image-2 with 50% lower latency, while Sunburst is designed for premium creative and editing workflows. Final Thoughts ChatGPT Images 2.5 may be less compelling as a standalone image generator than as an editing system. OpenAI’s demos consistently highlight the ability to preserve what already works while making targeted changes without unnecessarily altering the rest of an image. That suggests a shift in how AI image tools should be judged. The real test is no longer simply whether AI can create an image from scratch. It is whether it can make the change you want while protecting everything you want to keep. Images 2.5 is clearly aiming at that challenge. The images for this guide were sourced from OpenAI’s official ChatGPT Image 2.5 release page. Frequently Asked Questions Q1. What is ChatGPT Images 2.5 mainly designed to improve? A.
