Companies rushed in on AI. Now some are pulling back

Rapid AI adoption left workers cleaning up a flood of errors and low-quality work Employers around the globe are grappling with the fallout from rushing to adopt fast-changing artificial intelligence tools. Apple launches HomeView, its first smart display for the home

The HomeView is a smart speaker with a touchscreen display. It’s available in silver, starlight, rose pink, and space grey. | Image: Apple It's finally here: Apple's long-rumored smart display, the Apple HomeView, has arrived. I got a first look at the device in New York City this week, and it's gorgeous. The HomeView puts a small, vibrant screen atop a speaker base for taking video calls, beautifully displaying photos, and providing information at a glance with Apple's Siri AI voice assistant. The device's square shape makes it feel less imposing than larger smart displays like Google's Nest Hub Max or Amazon's Echo Show 11, and I can see it fitting nicely on my kitchen counter - though it might be a hair too big for my bedside table. Google Deepmind’s New Resident Philosopher Tackles AI Ethics

How should humans relate to generative AI? In what ways do we, or should we, treat a large language model (LLM) as if it were a person? If an AI became conscious, how could we tell? Does it make sense to think AI could some day have moral rights? These are among the cognitive and ethical questions that occupied philosopher Henry Shevlin at Cambridge University’s Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence. But last May Shevlin became part of the growing cohort of philosophers who work inside leading artificial intelligence companies. Though he remains active at Cambridge, he now spends 80 percent of his time at Google DeepMind (job title: “Philosopher”). Shevlin spoke with IEEE Spectrum about why philosophers are drawn to AI, how humans and AIs relate to one another, fears of “rogue”…

Mix, Don't Tune: Bilingual Pre-Training Outperforms Hyperparameter Search in Data-Constrained Settings

For most languages of the world, language model pre-training operates in a data-constrained regime where models must repeat their training data many times, degrading generalization. Two remedies exist: aggressive hyperparameter tuning such as high weight decay, and mixing in data from a high-resource auxiliary language to directly aid the low-resource target. While hyperparameter tuning regularizes the model by shrinking weights to restrict network capacity, auxiliary data mixing uses a tunable mixing ratio to expand the training distribution and diversify the training signal with new…

The experiment brings a decades-old prediction into a new setting where matter and quantum fields influence one another.

Researchers discovered that light’s internal geometry can naturally produce left- and right-handed patterns, challenging long-standing assumptions about how light behaves. By carefully arranging a beam’s structure, scientists can control where and how these spinning patterns emerge, unlocking a new way to manipulate light.
