Jony Ive’s first OpenAI gadget is reportedly a hockey puck-sized smart speaker

The AI device OpenAI is developing with former Apple designer Jony Ive is "essentially a smart speaker without a display" that's battery-powered, doughnut-shaped and roughly the size of a hockey puck, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman. The device, expected to launch in 2027 for a price over $300, reportedly "will have a unique look, complete with moving parts," including some that will move on their own to show when the device is responding or interacting with the user, along with lights, a camera system, and other sensors. Gurman's sources also say the "battery-powered" device is designed to be "easy to carry around the home wit … Read the full story at The Verge.

Cloudflare Introduces Kitesurf: An Agent-First Web Browser That Runs Entirely in V8 Isolates on Cloudflare Workers

Cloudflare has released Kitesurf, a stateless web browser built specifically for AI agents that runs entirely in V8 isolates on Cloudflare Workers, with no Chromium underneath. The browser drops human-facing features like tabs and extensions in favor of what agents need: machine-readable content, scalability, and isolation. Built in 12 weeks using Rust components like Blitz, Stylo, and Boa JS, it already passes 215,000+ Web Platform Tests. Benchmarks show 3.1–3.8× less CPU and 4.7–7.0× less memory than Chromium on screenshots and HTML extraction. Existing Puppeteer, Playwright, and MCP clients work by adding a single browser=kitesurf parameter, free while in beta. datasette 1.0a38

<p><strong>Release:</strong> <a href="https://github.com/simonw/datasette/releases/tag/1.0a38">datasette 1.0a38</a></p> <blockquote> <p>This release fixes a <strong>SQL injection</strong> security issue that affects Datasette instances that serve a <strong>mixture of public and private tables</strong> in the same database, with access configured using the <a href="https://docs.datasette.io/en/latest/authentication.html">Datasette permissions system</a>.</p> <p>Site administrators who serve private tables in this way are advised to disable the <a href="https://docs.datasette.io/en/latest/authentication.html#execute-sql">execute-sql permission</a> <actions_execute_sql>` on that database to prevent users from accessing private tables using raw SQL queries. The bug that has been fixed would have allowed users with access to any public table to execute SQL injection attacks despite that restriction, giving them read-only access to data in private tables in the same database.</p> <p>This fix is also available in <a href="https://simonwillison.net/2026/Aug/6/datasette-2/">Datasette 0.65.3</a>.</p> </blockquote> <p>Thankfully this particular configuration - private tables and public tables exposed for the same database within the same instance - is likely to be rare. Lloyds Bank should publish the human cost of its AI savings | Letters

Banks should factor in the time spent by humans checking invented facts, writes Dr Gleb Tsipursky Your report (Lloyds Bank to cut £2bn in costs as part of AI-powered strategy, 30 July) raises a question that financial targets alone cannot answer: who absorbs the work when automation fails? Banks often count the minutes saved by the employee who uses an AI tool.
