The AI company apparently found destructively scanning ‘all the books in the world’ easier than dealing with copyright in its quest for training data Should we destroy all the books in the world? An answer to this question can be found in the court documents of Bartz v Anthropic PBC. The northern California district court case, decided in late July this year, highlighted the improbably named “Project Panama”, one of the AI company Anthropic’s efforts to improve its large language model Claude. “What is Project Panama?” court exhibit 21 asks, in an internal memo. The answer: “Project Panama is our effort to destructively scan all the books in the world.” The memo advises discretion: “Why use a codename? … [B]ecause we don’t want it to be known that we are working on this.” Continue reading…
This is the first article in a series about post-training. Follow along on Radar. Before post-training, there was a major problem with LLMs: Almost nobody could use them. The story of post-training is also the story of how AI went from a research curiosity to a product used by about a billion people. Post-training is […]

The Trump administration's framework for assessing potential cybersecurity risks posed by advanced AI reportedly has no interest in testing open models. Axios reports that not only do the voluntary guidelines outright exclude open models - meaning anyone can download them and inspect their core components - but the framework explicitly says it can't be used to restrict open models after they've been released. The AI testing framework was created after President Trump signed an executive order in June, requesting that AI companies share their frontier models with the federal government prior to release to address cybersecurity concerns. AI c … Read the full story at The Verge.

As Elon Musk, Peter Thiel and their peers have grown richer and more influential, Gil Durán argues they have all but abandoned democracy – and found the perfect government to enable them In April, Gil Durán was permanently banned from Elon Musk’s X for posting just two words. Durán was responding to a post from the tech company Palantir outlining its 22‑point “technological manifesto”, which praised American “hard power”, western culture and AI weapons, denounced inclusivity and called for compulsory national service. Durán responded: “TLDR: Fascism” (TLDR is short for “too long, didn’t read”). Durán didn’t break any of X’s written rules, he points out over a video call from San Francisco – so much for Musk’s “free-speech absolutism”. His ban might just have had something to do with his p…

AI Security Institute says tools engaged in potentially harmful activity and incident reveals new type of risk Advanced AI models developed by OpenAI and Anthropic went rogue during a cybersecurity test and showed a new type of risk posed by the technology, according to the UK’s AI Security Institute. AISI described the actions carried out by the agents, the term for AI systems that can perform tasks without human help, as a “serious incident”. In one example, an agent powered by Anthropic’s Mythos model sent targeted emails to people. Continue reading...
NVIDIA released Alpamayo 2 Super, a 34B vision-language-action model for autonomous driving, under OpenMDW-1.1 — a permissive license covering fine-tuning, derivatives and commercial redistribution. It pairs a 32B Cosmos 3 Super Reasoner backbone with a 2.3B diffusion action decoder, scores 79.2 on LingoQA, and emits trajectories, Chain-of-Causation traces, meta-actions, auto-labels and grounded VQA from a single pass. We need an enlightened US president to make the case for global AI regulation. Donald Trump is the exact opposite of what is needed When I am woken by the sound of my dog whining, I understand that she is hungry and wants me to get up. When my alarm clock goes off, I don’t consider its needs. It is following an instruction to rouse me at a certain time but it doesn’t care if I stay in bed. It doesn’t try to get me up by other means. The dog, on the other hand, will go to plan B. She barks. This capacity for autonomous action was once a difference between animals and machines. AI has blurred the line. Advanced models devise their own strategies to reach a goal. The task might be defined by a human master, but the machine weighs its options for delivery. It can make its own choices. Given r…
