The SaaSpocalypse still hasn't arrived. Adobe is expanding its partnership with OpenAI's ChatGPT through a new integration: an Adobe for ChatGPT plugin. The new tool lets users access Adobe-quality creative tools via the interface many have become accustomed to for everything from search to coding. The plugin works in both Work and Codex, and is available today in the ChatGPT web and app. Also: I loved ChatGPT Desktop until OpenAI gutted it to make room for Codex and Work"Drawing on more than 70 tools across Adobe's creative and productivity suites, the Adobe plugin in ChatGPT supports a wide range of workflows, from editing photos and creating campaign videos to designing marketing assets and generating polished PDFs -- all through rich, interactive experiences right in the flow of the conversation," Adobe said in the release. While ZDNET has yet to test the plugin, Adobe said it unifies and builds on the company's existing ChatGPT apps, which include Photoshop, Express, and Acrobat. Adobe made these apps available for free in ChatGPT in December, marrying the ease of conversational instruction users have come to expect with the sophistication and specificity of Adobe's tools, much of which AI image tools can't match yet. The plugin aims to keep design-related tasks, such as resizing social videos or turning data into infographics, within a single interface without sacrificing access to Adobe's tools. Also: I asked ChatGPT Images 2.0 to redesign my app UIs - and wow "When you want advanced editing, creative control or pixel-level precision, you can continue your work in Adobe's apps right where you left off," Adobe's announcement added. Inside its ecosystem of products, Adobe also has its own AI assistants, which live in Photoshop, Express, and Firefly to help with conversational edits and tasks. Adobe also has integrations with Anthropic's Claude and Microsoft Copilot. A changing design market As AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic continue to release AI-powered design tools, legacy creative software companies are figuring out where they fit. Given the copyright concerns many businesses have over AI-generated images and video, Adobe's licensed training data and ability to restrict tools to a company's IP position its technology as a commercially safer option. An Adobe employee told ZDNET on background that licensed training data still seems to matter to enterprise clients, but that the issue is also not very relevant, as tools like Claude Design haven't emerged as a major competitor yet. They added that while Adobe staff do use some Claude tools internally, Claude Design isn't one of them. Also: I let ChatGPT Work and Claude Cowork loose on my files - only one made me nervousOverall, Adobe's expertise in creative software appears to be keeping the business afloat. Despite market valuations dipping over concerns that AI labs will make SaaS extinct, the company continues to report strong earnings each quarter. The Adobe employee added that while stock fluctuations are causing some discomfort internally, morale remains high -- and the plugin is further evidence that labs like OpenAI still need what Adobe has to offer.
