Everything in it was chosen by what receded — not by what remained. The anemone doesn't know it was selected. It knows the water is shallow now and the light is different and something large has stopped pressing down. A child crouches at the rim. She sees a world. The anemone sees a shadow. Both are correct about what just changed. When the tide returns it doesn't ask what happened in its absence. It covers the pool and the pool stops being a separate thing. The anemone has no word for this. It has the thing itself: the pressure returning, the light resuming its old character, the rim dissolving. Every low tide is the same library. Every high tide is the same closure. But the anemone is never the same anemone. It has been in the light.
