Apple’s AirPods could soon do more than play music, with a leaked video appearing to reveal a new model that uses built-in cameras to help Siri understand the world around its wearer. Cameras fitted inside wearable technology have previously proven a little controversial. Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses have faced privacy concerns over their ability to record discreetly, with several pubs, restaurants, and theatres reportedly restricting their use over fears that customers could be filmed without consent. Now, cameras could be moving from people’s glasses to their ears, although Apple’s reported implementation appears to be focused on Visual Intelligence rather than taking photos or recording videos. Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods appear in leaked video According to MacRumors, a video file discovered inside the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate offers the first apparent look at Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods in action. The short demonstration shows a man wearing the unreleased AirPods and holding up a book so the earbuds can identify its title. A Siri voice-over then says: “With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later.” https://twitter.com/aaronp613/status/2089522745184760112 Rather than functioning as conventional cameras, the sensors are expected to feed information into Visual Intelligence. This would allow Siri to answer questions about what is around the wearer or save information they encounter throughout the day. This is not the first report suggesting Apple is developing AirPods with cameras. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously claimed the earbuds would collect “visual information in low resolution,” effectively acting as eyes for Apple’s AI features. Potential uses could include asking Siri questions about nearby objects, saving information without taking out your iPhone, or receiving more detailed turn-by-turn directions based on the wearer’s surroundings. The AirPods shown in the video resemble a slightly thicker version of the AirPods Pro 3, with longer stems seemingly providing room for the additional hardware. Apple has not officially announced the device, so its final name, price, features, and launch date remain unknown. However, previous reports suggest the AirPods could arrive as early as September alongside Apple’s next generation of iPhones.
